Why finishing decides everything

The drywall panels are the cheap part of your walls. The finish — tape bedded in mud, three coats feathered wider each time, sanded with angled light — is what you actually see under paint. Two crews can hang identical board; the finishing is why one wall looks perfect and the other shows every joint.

What proper finishing looks like

  1. Tape. Paper tape bedded into wet compound over every seam and inside corner. No bubbles, no dry spots.
  2. First coat. Seams and fastener heads covered; corners shaped with corner bead where needed.
  3. Second coat. Feathered wider to flatten the joint. Drying time before this — always.
  4. Third coat. Wide, thin, final leveling.
  5. Sand. With a light held at an angle, so every flaw shows itself before paint does.

There are five standard finish levels, Level 0 to Level 5. Most homes want Level 4 — smooth enough for paint to look even. We explain them in plain English at drywall finishing levels.

Fixing someone else's finishing

A lot of our work is rescuing bad mud jobs: visible seams, crooked corners, over-sanded spots, texture sprayed over unfinished joints. We skim-coat and refinish over it. If your walls looked bad the day the paint dried, the finishing was the problem — and it is fixable.

For DIY hangers

Hung your own board? We will tape and finish it. Hanging is the easy part; finishing is the craft. This is a common and smart split — see DIY vs. hiring a pro.

Questions homeowners ask us

What is the difference between taping and finishing?

Taping is the first step — embedding tape in the seams. Finishing is everything after: the coats of mud, the sanding, the final surface. "Finishing" is the whole craft.

How many coats of mud does drywall need?

Three, as a rule — each wider than the last — plus sanding. Fewer coats show seams under paint.

Can you fix bad drywall finishing?

Yes. We skim-coat over visible seams and crooked corners and refinish to smooth. Bad finishing is very fixable.

I hung my own drywall. Will you finish it?

Absolutely. Bring us in for taping and finishing — it is the step where experience shows most.
