Why homeowners remove popcorn ceilings
Popcorn texture dates a room instantly, catches dust, and is nearly impossible to clean or paint well. Removing it is one of the highest-impact updates you can make — the room looks taller, brighter, and modern the day we finish.
How removal works
- Test and prep. We check how the texture is bonded and seal the room — floors, walls, fixtures, everything.
- Scrape. The texture comes off, ideally in clean sheets when it was applied over unpainted drywall.
- Repair. Scraping reveals the ceiling's sins: bad seams, dings, old patches. We fix them all.
- Refinish. Skim, sand, and either leave smooth or apply your chosen texture.
The painted-popcorn problem
Straight talk: if your popcorn was painted over, it will not scrape off cleanly. Painted texture has to be skimmed over or, in bad cases, the ceiling gets new board. We tell you which one you have on the free visit — before any price is set.
A word on older homes
Popcorn texture in homes built before the 1980s can contain asbestos. If your home is from that era, the texture should be tested before anyone scrapes it. We will not scrape a suspect ceiling without a clean test — and neither should anyone else. If it tests positive, an abatement contractor handles the removal and we do the refinishing after.
Dust, controlled
Ceiling scraping is the dustiest drywall job there is. We seal the room completely, run dust control, and clean top to bottom when we are done.
